Laurence and Kathy Cheveldayoff

chevyshackcropb.jpg

Having served for over 33 years with the Canadian Baptist Ministries(CBM), they have officially retired from 'career' missionary ministries. Countries they have ministered include: Costa Rica (during their Spanish language training),  Bolivia, Brazil and Canada. After over 9 years of ministry in Bolivia, they served as Western Canada Reps for Canadian Baptist Ministries for almost four years before returning to South America, this time to Brazil for nearly 20 additional years of ministry.
They have signed on as "Short Term Ministries" (STM) and CBM has approved a yearly return to Brazil to follow up on recent ministries that continue to develop since the Chevys returned to Canada in 2004.

From the Chevys: Laurence & Kathy Cheveldayoff

By the time this email reaches you, we will be in the Toronto area, returning from Brazil to spend five days with our daughter Laurena and her family.  On Tues. 17th, we will wing our way west and hopefully rest our weary heads on our own pillows in our house in Duncan, BC.

 IRSA and CARS in Brazil:
We leave, very much encouraged that the small setbacks suffered last year are behind and God is leading IRSA/CARS to not only continue growing but developing in some different ways.
Starting in August, the third group of students will launch off on a three trimester journey that will culminate in Dec. of 2008 with each one receiving a Diploma from IRSA and a Certificate from the Baptist Seminary of the ABC area of cities in greater Sao Paulo.
Over the last two and a half years, 15 Agents of Social Responsibility have graduated and another 15 have taken either one or two of the trimester course. Praise the Lord.
The financial situation, although meagre, will be able to facilitate both the IRSA Assoc. operations and the CARS teaching program.
The IRSA web site is being upgraded BUT you can visit it at any time: (It has an English section)

THE 2007 IRSA/CARS GRADUATION:
What a joy it was for Kathy and I to participate in the second graduation exercises of IRSA !! It was held in a small Baptist church which had three students that completed the CARS course.  Some of the main officials present were:
== The rector of the Seminary, Pr. Sidnei. The President of the Faculty who is also the vice president of IRSA: Pr. Nelson, The Executive Director of IRSA/CARS, Pr. Fernando, The president of IRSA/CARS; Pr. Saulo and the new co-ordinator of IRSA; Iolanda Miranda.
== Miss Sirlei from INTESE (an evangelical Institute that helps over 100 evangelical Assoc and Institutes in the greater Sao Paulo area.) gave the keynote address.
Kathy and I were proud to see each student called by name to receive a Certificate from the Seminary (Value of one elective completed should they continue on) and a Diploma from IRSA recognizing each one as an "Agent of Social Responsibility"   The two of us also presented each one with a Portuguese's NIV Bible with zippered cover.

WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE CHEVYS:

BACK TO THE PAST AND ON INTO THE FUTURE:
The two of us have signed in to direct the Seniors camp at the  Sylvan Acres Ministries  camp site on Vancouver Island !! That will take place between the 20th and 24th of August.
Camping has always been in our blood and we decided to get back into the swing of things BUT on a Senior level. That should limit the leap of cultural change we need to make !
We are on the VIA (Vancouver Island Assoc) board and could not refuse to help out with the 2007 summer camping programs. Why not take a look in the Sylvan Acres Ministry website: http://www.sylvanacres.org/

AN INTERESTING SITUATION BECOMES A REALITY:
Well, we have been hinting about 'an interesting situation' that needed a bit more time to develop !!
Here it is:
We have accepted the call to minister with the International Baptist church in Costa Rica for three months. Upon finishing our Seniors camp on Vancouver Island, we will repack to take on this new ministry that is primarily to focus on the Senior group both in and around the church and capital. Sao Jose.
Details are being worked out but God has given us a number of green light indicating "it's' a go" !!
Both Kathy and I have our hearts turned by God in this new direction !!. The church in Costa Rica will cover our expenses of travel, accommodation and transport. We have offered to look after our food costs since these are basic no matter where we are and live.
I recently made an observation to Kathy, that since accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour, He filled my mind with visions of ministering outside of Canada. When she decided to co-partner in ministry and marriage, she was fully aware and accepting of God's calling upon our lives.
The interesting thing is that I thought upon 'retiring', that was the end of the vision BUT now we have realized that every time we return to Canada, He just pushes us out and into new directions !!!!
MORE ??  There is another situation forming BUT it needs more time to define itself.  It should clarify itself in a month or so.  We will keep you posted.

PRAYER NEEDS: please bring the following before the Throne of Grace:
== The members of the IRSA Assoc. to continue looking to the Author and Finisher of their faith and the call to ministry through this association.
== His call upon the hearts of new students to enrol in the CARS course starting this August.
== The continued development, filming and production of DVD's and manuals to launch the CARS course in a  Distance Education format.
== Iolanda, so she can capture the essence of the IRSA/CARS ministry and be able to start promoting amongst the evangelical churches in the area.
== Patience for Iolanda as she re-organizes the IRSA office, develops better ways of communicating with the members of IRSA and does the daily secretarial tasks.
== Safe travels and good health for the Chevys returning to Canada and preparing for the Seniors camp at the Sylvan Acres Ministries camp site (near Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island).
== The power of the Holy Spirit to guide Chevy as he gives the message on three Sundays this summer in his own home church in Chemainus.  We are without a pastor right now.
== The Lord giving dreams and visions for the Chevys as we look towards the ministry in Costa Rica.
== A clear leading of the Lord as the Chevys look at another situation for ministry in early 2008.

We trust you have been encouraged by how God has and is working in the situations and ministry opportunities mentioned above.  Please remember that it is your prayer and giving along with His calling that is making all this possible.

Again: May HIS LOVE SHINE TO AND THROUGH YOU !!
The Chevys

He died, He rose, He's coming back again!!
Servanthood is a major distinguishing mark of Jesus and He commands us "follow Me"
That's the path into the world from the CROSS.

Update - June

From the "Chevys" Laurence & Kathy
It is hard to believe but in 18 days, we will again be able to lay our heads on our own pillows in own house !!
Time has sped past BUT things at the IRSA office are settling down and IRSA's new coordinator, Iolanda Miranda, is now getting into the routine.
God is providing new opportunities as well as the challenges of the 'old' ones. Finances are starting to trickle in again. Pr. Fernando and Iolanda are complimentary to each other in their gifts and abilities. The Chevys are trying to squeeze in all the hours possible before 'winging' north again. We have cancelled our plans to take a few days off in July to continue the orientation process with Iolanda
We would like to officially present Iolanda Miranda to you and end with a list of praise and prayer needs.

IRSA's new Co-ordinator:  Iolanda Miranda da Silva (that's her full name)
It is with a profound joy that we present to you, IRSA's new co-ordinator (the Social Responsibility Institute of the Americas).
Our first encounter with her was in the Heliopolis Baptist Project (a large slum of 100,000 people in the center-east part of the city of Sao Paulo). Along with Pr. Devanir, his wife and Iolanda, we were the team that helped in the planting of two Baptist congregations plus renovate a two story building that became the Baptist Center.
Iolanda was trained to assume the Administrator of the Heliopolis Baptist Project.  Before that happened, she felt a strong call to work with the establishing of PEPES (an Education Program for Preschoolers). The organization was called ABIAH and became international in it's scope.
After 7 years of ministry, she returned to Sao Paulo leaving behind a ministry profoundly blessed; In 8 Brazilian states and through 9 Baptist conventions, more than 70 preschools came into being.
She has experience in international travel; In India, she participated in a special course plus in  ))). Africa. was part of a team in the training for establishing PEPES.
During our ministry visit this May, we met and visited with her. We had an opportunity to explain the purpose, goals and objectives of the IRSA/CARS ministry. Iolanda felt this is where God was leading her and put this before God to verify as a calling. On May 22nd, during a IRSA meeting, she was presented and accepted as IRSA's Co-ordinator. She assumes a large part of Pr. Fernando's former job analysis PLUS working as secretary -- present finances dictate this course of action.
You can encourage her (she reads English) by sending her an email: Miss Iolanda Miranda,

ONE IMPORTANT and interesting situation is in the making BUT we need a bit more time before it matures, to be able to involve you folks in prayer and maybe participation. Suffice it to say that the situation involves the Chevys in another and different ministry.  We will just have to leave you folks wondering and praying for a bit longer for  clarity and vision for us.

PRAISE AND PRAYER ITEMS:
 PRAISE FOR:
== An important addition to the IRSA/CARS team; Iolanda Miranda
== a renewed purpose and new directions for IRSA's ministries

Important update
IMPORTANT NOTICE: chevylk@cebinet .com.br  is now the ONLY email we are using. Please check if your email records are complete.
Notice that lkchevy  is now OUT and ONLY  chevylk. is functioning..

Thanks for your prayers for Kathy's Mom. The Lord decided to give Lily full healing and called her home on Sept. 15.  In some ways, we are still in a recovery state.

Kathy's Mom:
At the beginning of Sept. it looked so positive that we decided to get to Duncan, BC. after trying ever since Aug. 27th to get "home". That lasted not even two weeks as Mom took a turn for the worst and did not recover. It was back to Saskatoon and after the family celebration of her life, Kathy and I started the process of helping Dad reduce the apartment to a 'bachelor' status. At the beginning of Oct. we returned to Duncan and our cosy home as Kathy's sister (Linda who did get back from Afghanistan) and her brother Ron (living in Lethbridge, Alta) are working on a rotation basis to provide comfort and care for Dad.
Dad's future needs prayer as he, being officially blind, now needs special care that his wife was able to provide.

OUR HOME:
What a joy to live in our own home and not have to pack/unpack all the time.  Our actual Chevy Shack has been emptied out which meant a lot of boxes and equipment was stored in our garage. We are slowly unpacking (and scaling down) at least to the extend that our car now fits into the garage. There are still so many things to do but both time and money will these things accomplished 'slowly but surely'.
At the bottom of this Chevy Shack is a picture of what the front of our home looks like now -- our daughter Karrie is a professional landscape (artist) and came up with this arrangement. Good to have kids that have special talents and want to bless their parents with them.

OUR CANADIAN MINISTRY:
  CHEMAINUS BAPTIST CHURCH, VANCOUVER ISLAND
With Kathy and I named as "missionaries emeritus" by our home church in Chemainus, BC, we attend many church meetings. Our church has elders and then there are the 'olders': Pr. Jack Farr (Minister Emeritus), the Cochrane's (Life Elders), and then ourselves!!
It has been a busy time with the church doing a complete ministry and functioning review with help from the Baptist Union of Western Canada.
We were encouraged to hear that we have a 'healthy' church and need to look at some recommendations to be even more effective.

  SYLVAN ACRES MINISTRIES: (SAM)
The camp site is about 35 kms. from our home in Duncan and situated in the lovely Cowichan Valley with high hills all around and a sizeable lake near by.  Kathy and I are members of the VIA (Vancouver Island Assoc. (Baptist)) that also has a SAM camping commission.
It's nearness lends to occasional clear days to have us run out there and help along with the site development. It's a great outing and helps our physical condition in a very positive way. Also, we have been given opportunities to help promote SAM amongst the Baptist churches on Vancouver Island and leading a Seniors Camp in the fall of 2007.

 WHAT'S HAPPENING IN BRAZIL ??
PLEASE NOTE: In this edition of the Chevy Shack, you will encounter these abbreviations:  IRSA,  CARS,  ABRAS, BAPTIST CENTER... (in the Heliopolis 'favela' -- slum)
THE CARS COURSE: (The Course for the formation of Social Responsibility Agents) Evangelical churches send their laystudents to this course that has a full  trimester of studies and activities (a year and a half)
IRSA (the Social Responsibility Institute of the Americas) This organization was formed  to be the 'home' of the  CARS course and enable it to be offered in other parts of Brazil and the Americas. There are networking, production of materials, research  and project developments aspects to it as well.
ABRAS and the BAPTIST CENTER  ( ABRAS is the Baptist Society formed to guide the Baptist Center in Heliopolis in all it's programs and development working together with the two Baptist congregations in the area

THE CARS COURSE:
The numbers are lower than expected due to having to move the classroom site to a Baptist Church in a neighbouring area. The Baptist Seminary needed the classroom that the CARS students were using when the seminary lost an extra classroom they were using in a nearby church -- which expanded it's own local church programs.  However a very enthusiastic group of 13 students were able to make the transition and carry on. That's a dozen churches sending their laystudents to not only learn but launch Social Responsibility programs from their respective churches.
Pr. Fernando tells us that the classes are going very well and each student is not only doing his/her studies but, in addition, are researching and outlining their respective Social Respond program to lead their church in addressing some of the many poverty issues near by.
In the spring of 2007, these programs should be ready to initiate into action.
These students will complete this fall's studies in early Dec.   In 2007, the classrooms begin again near the end of Feb. because their 'summer' holidays will be from mid Dec. 2006 to near end of Feb.  2007.  Please note the prayer needs listed below.

IRSA:
Pr. FERNANDO, remains his usual optimistic self, full of energy and vision both for his Church and IRSA. He is thankful for the IRSA Brazilian supporters that provide enough of a financial base to do a 'skeleton operation'. He and the Secretary are working hard at widening the support base.
The new Secretary of IRSA, Gilberto, is now settled into his ministry and even teaching some of the CARS courses.  Remember, he was one of the first grads. from IRSA that took the extra trimester that is now an integral part of the CARS courses and training.
Right now, he is taking another of the tasks within his secretarial ministry; helping the students plan out their respective programs as outlined above. This involves visiting the Churches of the CARS students and individual one-on-one counselling.
BRAZILIAN BAPTIST WORLD MISSIONS:  IRSA continues it's contacts and preliminary planning with this great missions group.  The hope is to be able to
offer the CARS course to both new and returning missionaries. This means developing a "Distance Learning" program and the use of internet.
DISTANCE LEARNING: As mentioned, the first trial CD/DVD has been done with very good results. Finances are the main obstacle BUT God is working there and we will have some future funding for this project from a Canadian Christian Foundation.
GOOD NEWS:  IRSA has finally received it's approval as a Charitable organization status with the registration of it's bylaws.  It now has an official government charitable number.  This should help open more doors for financial donations.

ADVANCE ALERT FOR MORE GOOD NEWS:  We are in the process of including 15 or more photos: IRSA's 1st. grad. service, new offices, new secretary and shot of Sao Paulo in general. A short Chevy Shack will arrive with a 'point and click' web address to get you there directly.

PRAISE ITEMS:
== IRSA is now an officially organization recognized by the Brazilian government with it's own registered number in the Charitable category.
== IRSA continues developing as an organization helping individuals and churches address the poverty issues.
== CARS students continue very enthusiastic and now working out their social responsibility programs for their churches.
== CARS students now come from a variety of Evangelical church backgrounds.
== God has given us health and energy for the ministry opportunities before us.

PRAYER ITEMS FOR:
== Pr. Fernando and Gilberto as they administer the CARS course and keep developing the IRSA Society. That involves a lot of office hours, visits to churches and teaching time with the CARS students.
== Our health and energy as we continue helping now through Skype phone contacts, emails and letters.
== For the CARS students as they have classes to attend with homework AND prepare their projects.
== For the working out of details for the CARS course possibility of helping new and returning Brazilian Baptist missionaries.
== For safety of travel and the work we will be doing helping Les and Di in Orlando. Mostly small construction and remodelling things.
== Pray for out kids and their kids please:
The Zondo's, Harris and Laurena are having housing problems and need your prayers for wisdom in decisions that have to be made. John-Lauren is doing great in high-school and has just a few months left before moving on to higher education. He too needs wisdom for choices that need making.
The Skeads, Dave and Karrie, With two out of the nest and the last one that may strike out soon, pray for wisdom for the kids in the choices that need doing as it affect their futures.  The parents need wisdom in the ministries they are doing in their local Baptist church.
The Cheveldayoff's, Les and Di in Orlando: Les is participating in the Fort Lauderdale Baptist Pageant again this year and that means lots of practise time.
Di is having trouble with her left eye and doctors are having difficulty find out what is causing it. The kids are fine and looking forward to seeing us.

That's it for now. Our prayer is that the Lord showers many blessing to and through you to other who, in this confused world of so many choices, can see the only Truth and the Way ..... Jesus.
